Quarter-sawn white oak, cut from a fallen oak tree by myself. I created this handmade, one-of-a-kind white oak box from start to finish. Cutting the fallen oak tree up into large sections, then into smaller sizes and turned on a lathe, sanded and polished, and laser engraved.

Quarter-sawn oak is much more rare and expensive, valued for its display of very prominent medullary rays. Medullary rays (also referred to as pith rays, oak figure or tiger stripes) are thin horizontal rays that extend radially from the core of the tree toward the bark. They can appear very shiny and vary in height; from a few cells in some species to four or more inches in oak. It makes for very interesting and unique figuring on flat surfaces like oak platters and boxes.

I use organic coconut oil and locally gathered beeswax to finish all of my handmade wooden boxes, so that each item is completely food safe (if you want to use as a food container). At any time, when you wish to restore the polish and protective finish on your piece, take a small amount of beeswax and buff it into the surface with a cloth or paper towel. Handwash with water and towel dry after washing.
